Installing a Printer
How To Install a Printer in Three Easy Steps! In order to install a printer whether it be a $200 Kodak or a $25 Lexmark, there is one important rule that you must follow BEFORE you even get home from the store: *Check whether or not the printer comes with a data cable!!!* Some manufactures, such as Lexmark, do not include the data cable (the cable which connects to the computer) in the box with the printer. So, before you go home make sure the cable is in the box! If not, the box should say what kind of cable, whether serial, usb or firewire, is needed. Most of the time, though, the cable can be bought at the same retailer (or wholesaler) where the printer was bought. Now, time to get it together: Step One (1): Take everything out of the box (If you haven't done so already) and insure that you have everything that you are supposed to have. All manufacturers put in the box (or print on the box) a list of everything (all contents) that are inside it. Some printers come with an initial print cartridge, some do not. So it is a good idea to check the contents FIRST. Some printers come with tape on them to prevent their moving parts from being damaged while in the box, take this time to remove the tape as well. Step Two (2) DO NOT PLUG-IN ANYTHING YET!!! I cannot stress this enough! Newer operating systems such as Windows Vista and Windows XP try to automatically install hardware like the printer as soon as you plug it in. To do this, they use generic software and/or drivers that have a 50/50 chance of actually making your printer work correctly, and (rarely) may even damage your hardware. So, first things first! Insert the software CD that came with your printer into your computers CD-ROM drive and run the installation program. Newer versions will automatically run this program after you insert the disk, however, if not you can start this by simply double clicking on your computer's CD-ROM icon from the "My Computer" menu (or equivalent if not running Windows), this should begin the "Autorun" process. Follow all the on screen prompts until the installation process is finished. (Some installation programs ask you to plug your printer in at this time, if so go to step 3). Step Three (3) Now is the time to plug it all in! Simple printers have only two cords, one for power and one for data, so it should be fairly simple to connect these type of printers. The most common of data cables (At this point in time) is the USB or Universal Series Bus cable. To connect this cable simply find a matching small rectangular port in the back of your computer and plug it in. (this connection does not click or screw in, so please do not force it. Doing so may damage the cable and/or your computer). Another type of common data cable is the Serial Cable. This cable is fairly thick and the end has two thumb screws, one on each side to secure the cable to your computer. If you have one of these connections, find the corresponding port on the rear of your computer, plug it in, and then rotate the screws clock-wise until the cable is secure. If your printer is a multifunction printer or facsimile (fax machine), it may include extra cables which are needed to operate the extra functions. Refer to your users manual or instructions for how to do this as many multifunction printers differ in this area. After connecting the power and turning it on, your finished! If your printer come with a print (ink) cartridge, remove the packaging and tape now and install it into the printer. If your not sure how to do this refer to your users manual or instructions as there are hundreds of different types of cartridges out there. To be sure that you've installed correctly, print a test page. If successful, pat yourself on the back, you've just installed your printer! |
